       This thesis analyses the relationship between signs and architecture in urban space. It distinguishes mercantile, institutional, and “wild” signs, while showing that architecture both creates the need for signage and becomes a sign itself. In this way, the city appears as a layered system of signs that shapes 
our perception of space.
